lyrics

THE RIVER

When I close my eyes at night, I see the river flow

It glides beneath my silver feet, to the people that I know

I want to tell them I’m ok, and living on the land

But the river flows on out to sea, and leads me by the hand

The river rules my life you see, and always understands

And it navigates a course for me, that takes me by the hand

Keep me calm, and steel my nerve, when darkness shows its face

The strength I find within your depths puts terror in its place

You chase away the seething doubt, and parry blows from fear

For with you here beside me, what demons dare come near?

The river flows on out to sea, and always understands

For the river is my rock you see, and where I’ll make my stand

Let them come! Let them come! Let them put me to the test!

Let them throw their worst at me! Their daggers to my chest!

They won’t triumph! They won’t win! And see my courage die

For the river is my sanctuary, where all my fortunes lie

A tender word, a welcome meal, a roof above my head

A prayer answered daily, whispered in my bed

Another dawn, another day, great prospects to unfold

I lead my life with fortitude, for the river makes me bold

The river rules my life you see, and always understands

And it navigates a course for me, that leads me by the hand

Let them come! Let them come! Let them put me to the test!

Let them throw their worst at me! Their daggers to my chest!

They won’t triumph! They won’t win! And see my courage die

For the river is my sanctuary, where all my fortunes lie
